About

Associate Professor Dominiek Coates (Dom) is a trauma therapist, researcher, educator, and senior leader with over 20 years of experience in trauma-informed and evidence-based practice. Dom has worked as a therapist, researcher and senior leader in universities, hospitals, and non-government organisations. Her specific areas of expertise include childhood abuse and neglect, complex trauma, self-change, and integrated trauma-informed practice. She developed the first version of the trauma-informed principles of care that have become widely adopted.

She is a published author with almost 100 academic publications in psychology, counselling, mental health, healthcare and psychiatry. Her PhD investigated the life journey of people who joined coercive groups such as cults, and the impact of joining and leaving such groups on identity, mental health and social connectedness. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Faculty of Health, University of Technology Sydney.
